A reported 1,100 people died between 1995 and 1999 on the level crossings of Buenos Aires, in accidents that caused the cancellation of 10,000 trains. It is difficult to think of a single tunnel anywhere in the world that could potentially save as many lives as the soon-to-start 35km Sarmiento alignment will, and brings into sharp focus the important role underground infrastructure plays in maintaining urban safety.
