Hi-spec TBM under the hammer
May 2009
- One of the high-specification TBMs used on the Arrowhead water tunnels in Southern California is up for sale by auction and ready to take on its next project challenge. Auctioneers Ritchie Bros. of Perris near Los Angeles in California will conduct the auction over the course of three days from Wednesday, May 20 next week to Friday, May 22, with the hammer falling on sale of the TBM and its trailing backup and associated equipment on day three, Friday. Proceedings will start at 8am PCT (Pacific Coast Time).

TBM S-234 assembled and ready for launch
- The 5.8m (19ft) diameter Herrenknecht S-234 single-shield hard-rock TBM excavated the West Tunnel of the Arrowhead Inland Feeder tunnels complex and was the last to complete its 6km (3.8 mile) long drive in August 2008. Conditions on the two Arrowhead tunnels for the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) were notoriously difficult and the TBMs were design specifically by Herrenknecht to accommodate extensive pre-excavation grouting to control water ingress, under high hydrostatic pressures, and to consolidate fractured and tectonically disturbed ground. Boring started in 2003 and TBM advance rates peaked at 24m (80ft) in a 24-hour work cycle and averaged about 6m (20ft) per day. (See Reference links below for more details.)
- After completing its long drive for the Shea-Kenny JV in August 2008, the machine was dismantled and has been stored at the Ritchie Bros. Auctioneer's yard at 765 W. Rider Street, in Los Angeles. It is available for inspection this weekend, May 16-17, and during business hours up to start of the auction on Wednesday. No deposit or pre-qualifications are needed in advance of bidding and there are no minimum bids or reserve prices. The TBM, including cutterhead, shield and trailing gear, will be sold as one item to the highest bidder on auction day.
- Interested buyers can either bid in person at the auction or register to bid online. A prepaid refundable deposit signs up the bidder to log on to a live link to the auction action. Registration to bid live online is required at least two days in advance of the sale. Once sold, the sale price must be paid in full within seven days and the equipment removed from the site within 60 days to avoid storage fees.
